"Heavenly Father!" "I love you all!" "I love everyone!" "Jesus! Jesus! Jesus! Jesus! Jesus! Jesus! Jesus! Jesus! Jesus! Jesus! Jesus! Jesus! Jesus! Jesus! Jesus!" "I love all of you!"

On May 22, a three-quarter-mile-wide tornado carved a six-mile-long path through Joplin, Missouri, killing 160. Unable to escape, two dozen strangers sought shelter in a gas station's walk-in cooler while the funnel ripped apart every building, car, and living thing around. This is their story.

Of Meat and Men

John Mueller was the heir apparent to a legendary barbecue dynasty. Aaron Franklin was an unknown kid with a smoke-filled dream. This is the story of two pitmasters, their devoted fans, and some of the best brisket you’ll ever eat.

I read this seeing as it is in my part of the world and I accidentally gave myself a subscription to Texas Monthly. I then proceeded to try to repeat the article at my regular poker game the last time I was blacking out drunk.

I don't even like bbq that much .....

Idi Amin's obit from the telegraph. Awesome.

ROFL this is great.

He made a visit to Scotland which had a lasting impression on him. Some years later, he was to declare that he would be happy to accept the Scots' secret wish to have him as a monarch.

He started the "Save Britain Fund", offering to send cargoes of vegetables to relieve suffering, and that he would organise a whip-round of Uganda's friends, "if you will let me know the exact position of the mess".

Later, when a Tanzanian invasion brought him down, he urged Nyrere to settle the matter with a boxing match, to be refereed by Mohammed Ali.

Amin was particularly upset about the destruction of the aircraft, and dispatched a telegram to Israel threatening an immediate attack unless compensation was paid, as well as expenses he had incurred "entertaining" the hostages.

:giggle

Twice he applied for an American visa, first to visit Disneyland, and subsequently to enable him to pursue a new career as a professional 10-pin bowler. He was refused on both occasions.

His second wife, Kay, died during a failed abortion she undertook to conceal an illicit affair. Amin reputedly ordered her body to be dismembered and re-assembled with the limbs reversed as a warning to his other wives.

People are the worst.

A group of these people emerged from the stairwell as the list approached the cutoff of 45 degrees, and having fought their way to the promenade, they lunged at passengers already there, wrestling life vests from their grasp or tearing them off their backs. People fought back, of course, but some lost. It was not known what happened to the victims, but if they went into the water without flotation gear, as some passengers did, it is fair to say that they were murdered.

Id urge you to watch Idi Amin Dada, Barbet Schroeder's documentary on the man.

He had to edit it once in Ugana, as Amin insisted he vet any footage they used, then they had to smuggle the "real" raw footage out of the country at the very real risk of being literally eaten partially or in whole by Idi Amin with the remainder fed to crocodiles should they be caught, so it could be re-edited once they were safe.

Example.. there is footage of an emergency cabinet meeting where some minor official is taken to task for some absurdity.

They showed it straight as recorded to Amin, but once they got it out of the country they were able to pause the film during a close up of the clearly terrified official while explaining that he had been fed to the crocs some days later, and that there was a rumor Idi feasted on his heart while he was still alive (sort of), so on.

Im paraphrasing as I havent watched it in a decade+ but you get the idea.

I've always wondered about this kind of shit.

Also galling was the fact that they’d earlier mishandled a piece of wiretap evidence, blowing a previous attempt to indict him in 2005. They weren’t taking any chances this time.

What's the %'s looking like there, for it to be a mistake v a 'mistake? It's gotta be like 80% corruption right?
