FIGHTING BACK: North Warrnambool Eagles footballer Adam Wines was in a critical condition after being injured when a metal drum he was cutting into exploded.

NORTH Warrnambool Eagles Football Netball Club is rallying around footballer Adam Wines and his family after the 24-year-old sustained serious burns to his face and upper torso on Friday afternoon.

The Eagles’ leadership group member suffered severe burns to 27 per cent of his body when a metal drum he was cutting into with an angle grinder exploded.

Ambulance Victoria spokesman John Mullen said the service received a call at 4.17pm on Friday for a Woodford address, with a man in his 20s suffering serious burns to his face, arms and chest.

“He was taken through to Warrnambool hospital and then taken out to the airport and flown down to The Alfred in a critical condition,” Mr Mullen said.

On Sunday, North Warrnambool Eagles operations manager Jaime Barr said Wines’ condition was “definitely improving”.

“He’s still in intensive care and will be for a while, but they’ve taken the tube out today and he’s been responsive with his family,” Ms Barr said.

Wines’ mother Sue said doctors were “really confident” he would make a full recovery.

She said the family was “very grateful” for the support it had been shown by the community since the accident occurred.

Firefighters tackle huge barn fire at Newmill near Penzance containing tractors and gas cylinders
By CMJacqui | Posted: July 22, 2017

Around 35 firefighters tackled the fire in a barn at Newmill near Penzance

Sparks from an angle grinder caused a huge barn fire near Penzance that destroyed a tractor and led to fears of an explosion.

The fire broke out on a farm at Newmill at around 2.30pm in a barn containing tractors and gas cylinders.

Around 35 firefighters were called to the blaze and it took almost four hours for the fire to be extinguished and the scene made safe.

Tom Nicholas, crew manager at Penzance fire station, said: "Two crews from Penzance, two from St Ives, a water carrier from Helston and an incident command unit from St Just were called to the scene. We were there till about 6pm.

"We managed to stop the fire from destroying the whole barn. It destroyed half of it and one tractor was destroyed.

"The cause was an angle grinder in the barn. Sparks from the angle grinder. None of the gas cylinders exploded but we had to go through the worst scenario and treat it as though they could explode."

Safety order against man who locked partner in dog kennel is denied
Dublin District Family Court hears man threatened to use angle-grinder on house
Fri, Jul 21, 2017, 01:00
Fiona Gartland

A man was locked in a kennel by his civil partner, who threatened to use an angle-grinder on their property, Dublin District Family Court has heard.

In an application for a safety order, the man told Judge Paula Murphy that last month, in the course of an argument, his partner had pushed him into the dog house in the back garden and had locked the door.

Then he got an angle grinder, said “now you will see what I can do”, and went upstairs in their home.

The applicant said he called gardaí and, on their advice, applied for and obtained a protection order, a short-term safety order.

He told the court that on a separate occasion last year he was in his own room because his partner and he had not been speaking when he discovered his partner had installed a camera above his door.

“It was a complete violation of my privacy,” he said. “I was disgusted.”

On another occasion, he said he was cold in his bedroom and he put the heating on but his partner switched it off. He put the heating on again and his partner pulled the heating switch off the wall.

“I fixed it and when he discovered it was fixed, he pulled it off again and smashed it,” he said.

He also said, in another incident, his partner stormed into his bedroom and smashed up the room and he was cut by shattered glass.

He agreed with his solicitor that he had been in the civil partnership for more than three years, but he was now in fear of his partner and wanted a safety order. This would require his partner not to use violence or threaten to use violence, but would not exclude him from the family home.

Giving evidence, the respondent said his behaviour was a response to the applicant’s behaviour.

“Why do you all the time throw water in my bed?” he asked.

He said the first time it happened, it was in December, his bed was soaked and he had to sleep on the couch for two months. Then he decided to get a lock for the bedroom door.
After getting a lock, he came home from work and found the applicant trying to break down the bedroom door. “As soon as he heard me he stopped doing that and shouted offensive names,” he said. “Out of anger I knocked the door down myself.”

He said the applicant’s bedroom was full of empty bottles and he was drunk. The respondent admitted to having broken some of the bottles and also admitted that his partner had been cut with the glass.

“I went downstairs to get a plaster for him – straight away he called his friend and started laughing about it,” he said.

Asked about the angle-grinder, he said it was “a silly thing” and childish, and he did it to “play with his mind”.

He admitted to having broken the heating and said the house got too warm. He also said there was no battery in the surveillance camera. He accepted he had a temper. He had begged his partner for a divorce, but he would not give him one, he said.

The judge said it was clear the couple had come to the end of their relationship. But she was not convinced the threshold had been reached for a safety order. Instead, the respondent gave a sworn undertaking that he would not use violence.

GRINDING IT OUT
Plumber cheats death after he slashes open jugular vein when he suffers electric shock and falls on to grinder
By Jon Lockett
4th August 2017, 2:46 pm

A PLUMBER cheated death after he slashed open his jugular vein – when he fell onto a hand-held grinding tool.

Lalubhai Amrutlal Rajpur, 19, was cutting a wall to reach some pipes when an “electrical complication” saw him lose control of the razor-sharp cutter in the Maninagar area of Ahmedabad, India.

It slipped out of his hand and landed on the floor and the teenager fell to the ground – after suffering a suspected electric shock – and landed on the grinder.

He lost consciousness and woke up with the blade wedged into his neck.

Medics at Sheth LG Hospital removed the machine and managed to control the bleeding and the plumber is now in recovery at home.

Dr. RC Shah said: “After doing some basic tests, we immediately performed surgery on him.

“The blade of the machine had made a cut in his skin, muscles and jugular vein.

“We gently removed the machine and repaired the wound.

“His stitches were removed three days back and he was discharged from the hospital.”

The accident happened when Lalubhai was working at the C.T.M Gayatri Temple on July 21.

Three dinosaurs beheaded 'with angle grinder' at Australian museum

Confused children discover the damage to velociraptor models while exploring an outside display area at a museum in Canberra.

Three model velociraptors have been beheaded by mystery vandals at an Australian dinosaur museum.

The culprits scaled a 4ft fence and used an angle grinder or hacksaw to remove the dinosaurs' heads, according to police.

The models were in an outside display area at a museum in Canberra and CCTV shows they were damaged late on Saturday evening.

The CCTV also shows a pickup truck driving along the side of the museum building around the same time.

Police believe the people responsible arrived in the vehicle.

"The offenders had climbed a 4ft fence to gain entry," said Australian Capital Territory police.

"The damage sustained to the (three velociraptor) dinosaurs indicate that an angle grinder or hacksaw was used to remove the heads from the body."

Damage to the exhibit was discovered by children visiting the museum the next morning.

"We went out to check it out and three of our dinosaurs here have been decapitated," museum staffer Mitchell Seymour told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.

"We had heaps of kids coming up and going 'oh mum and dad, what's wrong with the dinosaurs?'

"It's selfish, and it's thoughtless is what it is."

In 2013 a giant fibreglass dinosaur was stolen from the museum.

It was later found in the home of a man who said it was taken as a birthday prank, according to local media.

Police are now looking for any witnesses to the vandalism.
