SHAWNEE — The man who killed his stepfather with an “atomic wedgie” told a judge Wednesday, “It’s like a bad dream.”
Brad Lee Davis
Brad Lee Davis, 34, of McLoud, pleaded guilty Monday to first-degree manslaughter for killing his stepfather the night of Dec. 21, 2013, after a fight.
The former Marine described the fight Wednesday at a hearing meant to help the judge decide the appropriate punishment. Sentencing is set for July 16.
The victim, Denver Lee St. Clair, 58, died after he was strangled by the elastic band of his own blue underwear. The band had been pulled over his head from behind. The cloth had ripped away from the band as the underwear was yanked.
The victim also had suffered blows to the head.
Davis admitted Wednesday to giving St. Clair the wedgie, saying he pulled the underwear up as far as he could. He also admitted he did so after knocking his stepfather unconscious inside his stepfather’s and mother’s trailer in McLoud. His mother was in a hospital recovering from hip surgery.
“I never had any intention of killing that man,” he told Pottawatomie County District Judge John G. Canavan Jr. “There’s no way I ever thought that could have happened.”
He called his stepfather a bully. He said he gave the wedgie so his stepfather would be embarrassed by it after waking up. He admitted taking a picture of it with his cellphone.
Atomic wedgie is a slang name for the the most extreme version of the cruel underwear-yanking prank done by bullies in schools across America.
Davis also admitted Wednesday to lying to an investigator about the fight, claiming 10 days later that he gave his stepfather the atomic wedgie as they struggled. “I knew that that wedgie was out of line,” he said of the lie.
